Under the Umbrellas: El Huracán

Project Type

Dance Lighting Design

Date

November 2022

Location

UNC Charlotte - Charlotte, NC

Role

Lighting Designer

This piece was performed during the UNC Charlotte 2022 Fall Dance Concert. Under The Umbrellas: El Huracán is a celebration of Puerto Rican life and culture, an exploration of regional geography and natural disasters, and a question of how to rebuild after tragedy. Section 1 is bright, bold, and energetic as a depiction of the expressive joy of Puerto Rican culture. The hanging umbrellas and scenic projection in this section are a nod to Calle de la Fortaleza in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. The umbrellas are also an important thematic element, and the lighting on their white, reflective surface changes accordingly throughout the progression of the performance.
Section 2 begins with an abrupt blackout, as if a storm suddenly struck, interrupting the party in the section before. Hurricanes are common in Puerto Rico and can pop up out of nowhere. The change in lighting reflects this sudden change and is bluer, dimmer, and more isolating than the previous section. This is to reflect the somber and uncertain mood faced in the midst of the disaster.
Section 3 continues following the hurricane that struck in Section 2. How do you pick up the pieces and move forward after such devestation? While still very blue, we begin to see some warmth return in the lighting, reflecting the glimmer of hope as this community starts to rebuild after the disaster.
