High School Musical Jr. is a one-act stage version of the classic 2006 Disney movie. Basketball star Troy Bolton falls for the intelligent new girl in town, Gabriella Montez. The pair must navigate the opinions of friends, school commitments, a newfound love for theatre, and their developing relationship.
Our production was put on in the Glass Educational Theatre, a small proscenium theater at The Naples Players. The scenic design was a unit set with two platforms. Transitions between locations—from the gym to the classroom to the theater and more—relied heavily on lighting. Accordingly, I established distinct color palettes for each location to quickly identify where the action was taking place. For example, the gym was warm with oranges and reds. The theatre was inspired by a classic high school backstage, with deep blue and warm white lighting.
